PubClub vs Inkygoodness @Cord Bar, Manchester
For our first ‘official’ PubClub event we headed up to Manchester to team up with Inkygoodness on their character Totem tour. We held it in the basement of Cord Bar.
A few years back I met up with Bec Brown (Blanket Magazine) and Julian James (NewSugar Magazine) for a few drinks at Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market. We’d all chatted many times via email and decided it’d be great to meet in person. The insightful day turned into a boozy night with Bec and Jules only just catching their last trains home. We decided to start a Publishers Club and arrange some social networking events for like minded people.
The first of these was held at Vibe Bar on Brick Lane, London. We all sent out an open invite via our social networks and hoped we’d find a few people interested in meeting up for drinks and creative chat. It turned out even better than expected and we got a great turn out including loads of illustrators that had taken part in our individual publications. We actually felt a bit guilty that we hadn’t arranged any activities considering the amount of people that attended so we agreed to put on a ‘proper’ event in the near future.
At the time Bec was living in Manchester and discovered a great space that we could use for the event. It was the basement of Cord Bar in Manchester’s creative quarter. It had dirty white tiles covering the walls and felt like the ideal space for the next PubClub. Our friends Inkygoodness were also in the middle of a nationwide art event in which artists decorated large wooden totems. So we asked if they’d like to share the space with us.
The PubClub launched a limited edition zine called ‘Totummy’ to tie in with the Inkygoodness theme. The zine had four different covers which were screen printed live on the day by one69a. The cover artists were Daren Newman, Lesley Barnes, Simon Wild and Stephen Chan.
Our event was sponsored by Ripe Digital who printed the inner pages of the zine.
